Chapter Eleven

As soon as they were sure to be out of sight, Asher dropped Beth’s hand, and she moved away, following his lead and putting more distance between them than was strictly necessary. Her cheeks felt hot and she willed herself to breathe slow and deep in hopes that it might slow her racing heart.

“So you survived a half-hour alone with Laura Bennet,” Asher drawled. “And more to the point so did she!”

“Yes.” Beth laughed, but it sounded hollow even to her own ears. “I’m sorry to interrupt your run, I just needed an excuse to get away. Carry on if you want, I’m fine to walk back from here alone.”

“Nah.” Asher yawned. “I’m done. Need to conserve at least a little energy for this evening...and tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” Beth didn’t realize she had asked the question aloud until Asher winked at her.

“All in good time, B. Let’s focus on first things first. Lancelot's is a nice place...” He glanced at her, and Beth frowned, affronted.

“You think I’m not capable of eating dinner at a nice restaurant?”

“Not at all! I just -” Asher stammered, evidently having been caught out in his prejudice.

“I’m assuming you’re not going to go out dressed like that?” She eyed his tracksuit and t-shirt, smooth over his muscular arms, and averted her gaze, her heart racing again.

“Touché.” Asher laughed. “Sorry. Laura Bennet got me all riled up.” He shook his head. “I don’t know what she’s got against me.”

Beth said nothing, thinking back to the woman they had left behind them. Laura Bennet had inherited her place on the Flynn board in the settlement of her husband’s will, but she was determined to make the position her own. She had put her hopes and plans on hold time and time again to facilitate Flynn meetings to take place or to be present to present an award. The woman was tireless, and Beth had always admired her tenacity. Except for when she turned it against Asher. For some reason Beth had never yet managed to understand, Laura Bennet was pitched to dislike Asher and everything he stood for. She thought he didn’t take his job or his responsibilities seriously, that he had earned the position of CEO because of his name and who he was related to, and made no efforts to justify his role or his pay-check. It was jealousy, Beth supposed. Laura wanted to be CEO, she thought that her efforts qualified her for it, and she was determined to succeed. When merely pointing out Asher’s lack of qualifications hadn’t worked, she had turned to his social life. Beth bit her lip. Was it really right, what they were doing? Asher did struggle with commitment, if the constant parade of beauties that slipped in and out of his life were anything to go by. Beth sighed, suddenly sad. It was fun, playing the part of his fiancée, but she needed to remember that was all it was. Playing. Asher could be charming, she knew that as well as anyone.
